When creating new inventory items, there is an option in System Setup: Inventory: Prompt For Stock Count When Adding which will immediately prompt for your current stock count.
However, this feature does not work the same way when creating new matrix inventory. From the matrix view you cannot change the stock count on the matrix for any item.
SOLUTION: To change the stock counts of matrix inventory,
1) go to the Inventory List
2) highlight the Matrix Header
3) Rightmouseclick and choose Verify/Adjust
4) this will open a grid so you can enter stock counts of the matrix children.
