QUESTION:
How can I set us up so we start coming up in the search engines. I know it takes time to propagate but I want to make sure that if someone is looking for a printer cartridge that we come up on the list of providers. Is there a module that needs to be added to the template to facilitate this?
ANSWER:
Unfortunately there is not a module that I'm aware of that guarantee better placement search engine rankings. Each search engine's algorithm's are different and constantly changing to help prevent people from always ensuring themselves a decent place in the search rankings. Fortunately, in most cases, Joomla templates are developed in such a way that is typically search engine friendly. So that's a good start.
However, you want to make sure that you make good use of META tags (i.e. Title, Description, Keywords). You can change make changes to your META tags by going to your Joomla backend (www.yoursite.com/administrator) then choose the Site pull-down menu and select Global Configuration. Once there, choose the Metadata tab. Furthermore, make sure the content on your home page contains many useful keywords and/or phrases that would be used to search for your business type and offerings.
If you follow the basics of search engine optimization (SEO) for your website you are one step closer than many other websites that do not employ the bare minimums.
Finally, there are many many SEO companies out there. It is highly advisable that you do your homework on any that you plan to do business with. Make sure you get several solid referrals and follow up with those referrals and ask them how effective the SEO company was in improving the search rankings for their web site. You could end up paying $3000/month and not see any significant results ever. SEO is big business on the Internet, so doing a lot of research is highly advisable before spending any money on it.
