Selling Gift Certificates or Gift Cards on your e-commerce site will require you to create separate inventory items which include the value of the card. For example, you will create GC50, GC100, GC150 for gift cards of $50, $100, $150 respectively. These items should be non-taxable and should not track stock.

When the Internet Order is received, and before processing the internet order, you SHOULD substitute GC50 with a GIFTCERT for $50.00, for example. This will generate a card number to be stored in the Gift Certificate Manager for ease of redemption later. It will also impact your profit reports correctly.

If you do not substitute with GIFTCERT, then the items will be reported as Sales for the day and inflate your true profitability. Although you will be able to tender an invoice with an "unknown" gift card number, it would be better to make the substitution for additional reporting on Gift Card sales and status of cards.
