QUESTION:
Is a way to have the department and categories in Magento be different from the department and categories in my POSitive software product and still update Magento's inventory?
RESPONSE:
The simple answer is yes. Although only very basic testing on this has been done and we don't really know what, if any, other ramifications it will have. With that said, when you want to update existing items, the way we tested this was to uncheck the option "On the fly category creator/importer v0.1.x" on the Magmi importer configuration page (http://yourwebsite.com/magmi/web/magmi.php) and click Save Profile at the bottom. Be sure to re-check this option when importing new items, otherwise the item could be uploaded and appear to be assigned to a category but not show up in the front end. Then, once the item has been uploaded, you can reassign it to a different category or rename its existing category.
