QUESTION
When a computer monitor or printer is sold, we must charge the customer a set fee for recycling. How can this be done in PFW?
ANSWER
Although the recycling fee is a tax payable, PFW does not allow definition of a flat tax fee under tax setup. Instead, the flat tax needs to be charged on the invoice as an inventory item then run reports of how much was collected and pay those fees to the taxing authority.
We recommend...
1) create a Department called ADMIN and a category under that department called Recycling.
The Recycling category should be assigned a "No Tax" tax category.
2) create an inventory item - RECYCLING FEE - PRINTERS with a SKU of your choice.
--- cost = selling price.
--- Track Stock = No
--- Allow Discounts = No
--- Print Labels = No
3) When selling a printer this Recycling Fee item is added to the invoice. This process can be automated by using PFW's Tag Along feature.
--- Go to the Inventory List
--- Highlight an inventory item, such as a printer, which requires the recycling fee to be charged.
--- Choose the LINKs tab at the bottom of the screen.
--- Choose Accessory Manager
--- Highlight the Recycling Fee item and assign it to TAG ALONGS on the right.
4) Run a sales report on the inventory item or category to determine how much you need to submit to the taxing authority.
MODIFICATION
Instead of creating a dept/category, consider assigning the Recycling Fee item to the
FREIGHT category. Any inventory item assigned to FREIGHT category will be automatically excluded from any profit reports.
